Advertising Poster GPO Wheatstones Tape Telegraph 1858 Eric Fraser. Original vintage advertising poster for the General Post Office (GPO) - Wheatstone's Tape Telegraph 1858 - featuring a great illustration by Eric Fraser (1902-1983) of the Wheatstone telegraph, an early electrical telegraph system invented by English scientist Charles Wheatstone. It was a form of needle telegraph, and the first telegraph system to be put into commercial service. Wheatstone is depicted using the telgraph with a bright star in the sky in the background, the GPO logo and the stylised title text below. One of a series of posters published by the GPO to showcase the new telephone and telegraphy technologies. The General Post Office GPO was founded in 1660; Royal Mail was founded in 1516. Horizontal.
